S.S. Beaver

img_1586aThe original SS Beaver first commissioned by the Hudson Bay Company in 1836 to transport furs up and down the west coast. She was built in England  in 1835 for the Hudson Bay company and operated for 17 years. With its s steam powered twin paddle wheel and brigadine sails she sailed and paddled her way up and down the British Columbia  coasline picking up furs from the trappers and transporting them to Vancouver for shipment to England.

The Beaver later became a passenger and cargo vessel before being commissioned by the Royal Canadian Navy in 1863 until 1870. The vessel was later sold to British Columbia Towing Company to tow barges and sailing vessels in and out of the harbour.

The SS Beaver met its tragic end in 1888 when it ran up on land at Prospect Point in Stanley Park. Many people raided the ship for the copper and precious metals. They said it was to remember the ship and what she did for the west coast of Canada.

She was later replace with a replica and is now docked at Fisherman’s Wharf in Victoria BC. She has been refitted and renovated for cargo hauling and private functions. Set yourself up for a tour or adventure on the SS Beaver

Thank you Jason, a friend of mine is one of the owners on the boat now. He has been telling me about it for quite some time. I decided to dig up some material on my own as well, and share it.
