Butchart Gardens Finally

sunkengardenWell am I ever sorry I did not do this when we first moved to Victoria. We finally decided after almost 6 years of living in Victoria BC to visit Butchart Gardens. It was well worth the trip. The array of gardens are a must see for all garden lovers. There are gardens from various cultures and countries to keep the likely connoisseur.

Butchart Gardens in the Todd Inlet on Vancouver Island was founded in the early 1900s by the Butcharts (formerly from Owen Sound Ontario). Mr Butchart was a cement maker and moved to the Island to capitalize on the rich limestone (one of the best ingredients for making cement). His wife was actually responsible for the gardens as she felt there was a need to replenish the land so destroyed by the mining of the limestone. There came the birth of the Sunken Garden. Created to hide and beautify the deep crator left behind by the mining operations. This didn’t stop there. To see more on the History of Butchart Gardens check out there website.
